Frequently Asked Questions about Levonorgestrel Tablet 1.5 mg

  • What is Levonorgestrel Tablet 1.5 mg?

  • How does Levonorgestrel Tablet 1.5 mg work?

    • Levonorgestrel Tablet 1.5 mg is one pill that contains a higher dose of levonorgestrel, the same active ingredient found in many birth control pills for decades. It works in a similar way as regular birth control pills — mainly by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary. It is possible that it may also work by preventing fertilization of an egg (the uniting of sperm with the egg) or by preventing attachment (implantation) to the uterus (womb).

    • Based on the best scientific evidence currently available, the FDA determined that the labeling for Plan B One-Step should be updated. Specifically, the labeling statement regarding the mechanism of action was revised. Accordingly, references to mechanisms not supported by the best available scientific evidence (that is, effects on fertilization and implantation) were removed. Levonorgestrel Tablet 1.5 mg is a generic of Plan B One-Step; therefore, its labeling will be updated to reflect this change as soon as possible.
